In 1996 the WWW grew to 257,601 websites* including Ask Jeeves, Lending Tree, Angelfire, MapQuest, Hotmail, Medscape (possibly 1995), Travelocity, and the WayBack Machine digital archive. Also in 1996, the Madison based The Onion went online.

77% of online users sent or received e-mail at least once every few weeks, up from 65% in 1995.
