What was going on with the Internet in 2001

Many Dotcoms were shutting down but one biggie just got started.

Founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, Wikipedia launched on January 15, 2001.

Wikipedia, a fun blend of the words wiki and encylocopedia, is a free content online encyclopedia written and maintained by a community of volunteers.

According to Wikipedia, initially the site was only available in English but editions in other languages have been developed. With language editions combined, the site comprises more than 62 million articles, attracting around 2 billion unique device visits per month and more than 14 million edits per month.

In 2001, there were 29,254,370 websites* with their own designated URL.
