Domain Name Gold Rush

Did you know that until 1995 domain name registrations were free! However, as the demand for Internet registration became mostly commercial (97 percent), Network Solutions received authority in September 1995 to charge $100 for domain name registrations. (Thirty percent of this revenue went to NSF to create an "Internet Intellectual Infrastructure Fund.") The registration fee covered a 2-year period making it $50 per domain per year.

Working with Woodland Communications, SupraNet helped secure www.bologna.com and www.pickles.com for Kraft Foods. Working with Broadbent & Williams, SupraNet helped secure www.assistedliving.com, www.caregivers.com, www.seniordrugs.com, www.plastictubing.com and pultrusions.com.

In 1999 at the height of the dotcom boom, the domain name drugs.com sold at auction for $823,666. Also in 1999 Business.com sold for $7.5 million. In 2007 Business.com was resold for $350 million.
